KISTEP-Thomson Reuters Joint Forum hosted

KISTEP hosted the forum with a theme of 'A Way of Basic Research toward Nobel Science Prize' with Thomson Reuters, the worldwide academic information service company, in Myeong-dong on May 30.
This forum was prepared to review our research level and actively seek the excellency and the creation measure as the concern and investment on the strengthening of basic research capability are increasing.
The forum started with the opening address by Youngah Park, a president of KISTEP, the welcoming address by Jinwoo Kim, a Chairman of Thomson Reuters IP&Science Korea Branch, and the congratulatory address by Jangmu Lee, a Private Chairman of National Science & Technology Council. In succession, David A. Pendlebury, a prediction specialist for Nobel Prize winner whom Thomson Reuters announces every year, gave a presentation about the proposal for the capability enhancement in the national basic research, and Seungjun Yoo, a team manager of KISTEP, gave a presentation about the development direction of the basic research evaluation system.
David Pendelbury introduced a Korean research team which has shown nearly the world level accomplishment in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, and Material Science and retains the high citation frequency based on the standard from the year 2002 to the year 2012.
He also said, "The measuring analysis of thesis and citation can be utilized for the basic data which supports the science & technology policy, but it should not be utilized for itself." He proposed that ▲ the priority on the educations in Science & Technology, Mathematics, and Engineering, ▲ the promotion of intelligent exchange, and ▲ the investment in science should be made in order to receive the Nobel Prize.
In succession, the team leader, Seungjun Yoo, disclosed the reason for the analysis saying, "For the recent 10 years, the government has invested a lot on the basic research, and as a result there has been the quantitative growth and the qualitative growth in some fields. However, the overall qualitative growth still has not been accomplished so that its improvement seems to be necessary."
He then emphasized that the variety of research themes and the variety of applicable evaluation methods are important, saying, "Showing the first impact by pioneering a new field has been emerged as an important evaluation index."
