The 13th KISTEP Wednesday Forum was held.

KISTEP(Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning) opened the 13th KISTEP Wednesday Forum on the topic of 'IoT and Zero Marginal Cost Society' in the international conference room of KISTEP in Yangjae Dong on November 12th. KISTEP has arranged this forum to prepare for the change in economy and to grope for the measures following the approach of the Zero Marginal Cost Society, as the change toward a hyperconnected society is accelerated thanks to advancement in ICT technology.
The forum started with the topic presentation by Vice President Hee-soo Kim of DIGIECO, which was followed by the panel discussion of Senior Researcher Kye-young Choi of the Korea Information Society Development Institute, Professor Sung-bae Moon of the College of Economics and Commerce of Kookmin University, and Doowon Cha, the head of the Division of Strategy Planning of KISTEP.
Through the topic presentation, Vice President Heesoo Kim explained the major content of 'Zero Marginal Cost Society', a book written by Jeremy Rifkin, and presented his opinions on IoT, the Collaborative/Sharing Economy, and future of labor and occupation.
Saying that one of the big reasons which lead to 'Collaborative/Sharing Economy' is the 'IoT', Vice President Kim explained, "IoT of which the data is formed from the thing itself is linked with big data in real time. Later, the big data converted to a prediction algorithm by a high grade analysis is entered into an automatic system again to enhance the thermodynamic efficiency and improve productivity, and such a phenomenon reduces the marginal cost to close to zero in all the areas such as production and distribution of goods and services across the entire economy. He largely classified the effects brought on by the Zero Marginal Cost Society into ▲ advent of the Collaborative/Sharing Economy where consumers themselves become producers and ▲ movement to social economy which liberates human labor and evolves human labor.
In the subsequent panel discussion, Senior Researcher Kyeyoung Choi of the Korea Information Society Development Institute predicted that, "the viewpoint that capitalism will collapse due to depletion of profit is excessively pessimistic. The basic principles of capitalism are thought to operate. As to the issue of employment as well, if we look at occupations a little dynamically, employment can increase even when robots replace manpower in production. New employment that will support enhancement in precision of robots can be created. Only the concrete role of occupation will change but occupation itself will not vanish.
Professor Sungbae Moon pointed out that enhancing the utilization of the existing resources such as Uber should be distinguished from the concept of a Shared Economy. Lastly, Head Doo-won Cha proposed that a concrete discussion on the Shared Economy business models such as Uber that collides with the existing control and the existing system should be openly carried out.
