[The 133rd Wednesday Forum]Digital New Deal, Building Data Dam for Convergence of Big Data and AI

KISTEP held the 133rd KISTEP Wednesday Forum <Digital New Deal, Building Data Dam for Convergence of Big Data and AI> in the KISTEP International Conference Room on April 28 (Wednesday) to discuss issues on Data Dam. The Wednesday forum was broadcast online, without audience due to Covid-19, and can be viewed again at the KISTEP YouTube channel.

"In the 21st century, Big Data is so important that it is described as rice," said Kim Sang-sun, president of KISTEP. “The Digital New Deal of Korean New Deal, considered as current government’s priority, should be accompanied by both government and private sector. We need to review whether data-related policies are well-drafted and suitable,” he added.

▲ Yoon-seok Ko, head of National Information Society Agency (NIA), introduces the current status of AI business in Korea and two projects of Digital Dam (data building project for AI in education and big data platform building) among the government's digital New Deal business.

In the following session, Soon-cheon Byun, head of KISTEP's policy planning division, led the panel discussion, and the panelists discussed on roles of government for developing and enhancing the Data Dam business. The panelists are as follows: Jae-cheol Oh(CEO of I-ON Communications), Jae-sun Yoon(director of Selvas AI), Sang-yong Lee(professor at Konkuk University Law School), and Yoon-bin Lee(director of KISTEP Innovation Information Analysis Center).

▲ Professor Sang-yong Lee of Konkuk University School of Law urged the need to establish a legal foundation to support the intangible assets - Data. He added four possible challenges and respective solutions in the current data business.

KISTEP will distribute the Wednesday Forum Brief, which contains the forum's main contents and policy implications, to policy customers.
