[The 135th KISTEP Wednesday Forum] Scientific Cooperation and Agreement on Large Research Facilities: Focusing on Korea Multi-Purpose Accelerator Complex

KISTEP held the 135th KISTEP Wednesday Forum "Scientific cooperation and agreement on large research facilities: focusing on Korea multi-purpose accelerator complex" on June 9th to discuss which large research facilities are in need for scientific R&D and how to systematically promote them. The Wednesday forum was broadcast live online without external participants due to Covid-19, and can be viewed again through the KISTEP YouTube channel.

"Because large research facilities require large-scale investment, the government needs a national road map with mid- to long-term plans ahead," said Kim Sang-sun, president of KISTEP. "I hope this forum will find smart strategies to successfully manage establishing and running large research facilities, with reference to US’s case."

Hyun-jung Kim, a professor at Sogang University, concluded the presentation by explaining the principle and history of particle accelerators and the progress of setting up the Korea multi-purpose accelerator complex, suggesting a policy alternative to build communication networks with experts and facility users.

 

The panel discussion was led by ▲ Hyun Im, director at KISTEP and discussed on the significance of large research facilities in presence of ▲ Young-kwan Kwon (Vice-director of IBS Rare Isotope Science Project) ▲ Bong-jin Moon (professor at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology) ▲ Woo-sung Jung (professor at Pohang University of Science and Technology) ▲ Eun-jung Kim (researcher at KISTEP)

“It is important for large-scale research facilities, such as Korea multi-purpose accelerator complex, to gather opinions 

from facility users.” He stressed the need for legislation support that reflects the features of the project.

needs public support, followed by communication and consultation with the general public. “In order to secure discretion in the R&D budget system, 

a policy system such as Total Project Cost System can be considered,” he added.
