2022 Government R&D Program Joint Briefing

A joint briefing will be held to explain the main contents and detailed implementation plans of R&D programs, which are the specific contents of the government R&D budget in 2022.

 

The '2022 Government R&D Program Joint Briefing' will be jointly hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, 12 government ministries and Korea Institute of Science and Technology Planning and Evaluation (KISTEP) and will be held through the online platform from January 25 (Tuesday) to 27 (Thursday).

 

On the first day of the briefing session, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Education will explain R&D projects along with an announcement on the main characteristics of the government R&D budget for 2022. On the second day, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety explain the R&D business. On the third day, the announcement will be made in the order of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Rural Development Administration, the Forest Service, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

 

Minister of Science and ICT Lim Hye-sook said, “As the government R&D budget for 2022 is set at KRW 29,777 billion, an increase of 8.7% from the previous year, I feel a heavy responsibility to create results in the current task. I hope that the joint briefing enhances understanding of the government R&D budget and share various information.”

Lee kyung-soo, Head of Science and Technology Innovation Headquarters, said in the opening remarks, “In response to the global technological supremacy competition, we must advance the national essential strategic technology and carry out technological innovation to lead the era of great transformation.”

 

In addition, “R&D should be actively pursued to protect the safety of the people from infectious disease crises and to solve national social problems such as an aging population and disasters. Moreover, efforts should be made in areas such as regional innovation and support for young people and female scientists and engineers to expand the innovation base,” he emphasized.

 

Then, he added, “I hope that scientists and engineers put more effort into research and technology development so that we can overcome the immediate crisis and move forward as a leading country. Through the briefing session, I hope that the demands of the research field is well reflected in government R&D projects, and that results is created that meet the expectations and trust of the people.”

In a congratulatory speech, KISTEP President Jeong Byeong-seon said, “The government R&D investment in 2022 contains the science and technology-oriented philosophy of recovery, inclusion and growth that turns the economic and social crisis caused by the corona pandemic into an opportunity. The government has expanded the budget for major R&D related to the successful implementation of national tasks such as the Korean version of the New Deal, digital transformation, and carbon neutrality and to leap forward as a leading nation amid difficult economic conditions,”

 

He continued, “In order to become a leading nation, researchers must constantly challenge themselves, and the scientific community must create a challenging R&D culture that is not afraid of failure and opens new paths. In addition to expanding technological cooperation and joint research between countries to solve global problems, and strengthening technological alliances and economic cooperation with major countries, the cultivation of challenging global talents who will lead the future society and strategic technology fields should also be promoted along with R&D.” emphasized.

 

Finally, he said, "I hope that the importance and direction of government R&D investment is shared through ‘2022 Government R&D Project Online Ministry Joint Briefing’, thereby enhancing understanding of various projects and providing an opportunity to take on new challenges.“
