[The 142nd KISTEP Wednesday Forum] Economic Outlook for 2022 and Response Strategies in Science and Technology

KISTEP held the 142nd KISTEP Wednesday Forum on February 9 to investigate economic trends this year and to find effective countermeasures from the perspective of science and technology innovation policy. This forum was broadcast live online and can be viewed again through the KISTEP YouTube channel.

Byung-seon Jeong, President of KISTEP, said, “Technological innovation is the most important factor in environmental changes such as digital transformation, industrial restructuring, intensifying competition for technology hegemony, and carbon neutrality. Also, advancement in science and technology such as vaccines and therapeutic development will provide promising measures against COVID-19.”

Joo Won, General Manager of the Hyundai Research Institute, discussed the future outlook of global and the Korean economy for the next several years, and announced the 10 economic keywords for 2022 as AFTER TIMES (the future after COVID-19). Director Won Joo said that, there is a possibility that R&D activities could be contracted due to the weakening of the economic recovery, the science and technology community should make efforts to secure technology in issues such as supply chain instability and digital transformation. Finally, he suggested that R&D investment is a realistic alternative to overcome low growth.
In the following panel discussion, Young-soo Ryu, KISTEP Director General of Office of National R&D Coordination, Min-soo Kim, Deputy Director of Dong-A Science, Professor Ki-hoon Woo of Konkuk University, and Ho-sik Yun, expert member of National Research Council of Science & Technology participated in the discussion.

Deputy Director Min-su Kim pointed out that government R&D investment has increased in the midst of the recent sluggish economic growth and the prevailing low-growth trend and emphasized the need to gain public consensus on the achievements of science and technology.

Professor Ki-hoon Woo advised that R&D solutions are needed for digital trade and the spread of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism(CBAM). He also suggested that the government needs to continuously support SMEs on digital trade issues.

Expert member Ho-sik Yun emphasized that digital transformation, digital territory expansion, and entry into the G5 are accelerating paradigm shift in science and technology, and that R&D innovation should lead to development as a science and technology-centered country. He also suggested that a long-term research environment and innovation to a researcher-centric autonom.ous system are need to be established.
