Korean Government Ministries Unite for 2025 R&D Briefing Sessions

The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), led by Minister Sang‑im Yoo, together with 14 other government ministries and agencies, will host the 2025 Joint Interagency Briefing Sessions on Government R&D Programs, with the Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP), led by President Byung‑seon Jeong, managing logistics. The sessions will take place on January 22–24, 2025, at Maria Hall at the Catholic University of Korea’s Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital campus, with all briefings streamed live via the official event website and live‑streaming platforms. Attendees can join both online and in person.

These sessions follow the confirmation of the 2025 government R&D budget totaling KRW 29.5968 trillion. They will detail key R&D initiatives across participating ministries, highlighting innovations and action plans designed to foster collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutions.
On January 22, MSIT’s Office of Science and Technology Innovation provided an overview of the key features of the government’s 2025 R&D initiatives, covering:
• Innovations for shifting to a leading‑edge R&D model
• Key features of the 2025 R&D budget
• Improvements to the national R&D administrative system
• Major IRIS (Integrated Research Information System) inquiries and plans to enhance user convenience
In the afternoon, MSIT, the Korea Aerospace Administration, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport presented their respective R&D project directions.
On January 23, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will provide briefings, followed by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, and then the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
On January 24, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Ministry of Environment will feature presentations, as will a joint session by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Rural Development Administration, and the Korea Forest Service.

Gwang‑jun Ryu, MSIT Vice Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, delivered opening remarks, emphasizing, “With pressing challenges like climate change and demographic shifts from low birth rates and aging populations, the role of science and technology in addressing these crises and driving innovation is more crucial now than ever.” He announced plans to strengthen investment in national strategic technologies and expand foundational research to foster environments conducive to nurturing future talent. He further expressed his hope that the event would facilitate the sharing of innovative directions and policies for government R&D and promote interagency collaboration.
