KISTEP held the Public Hearing on the 2020 Government R&D Investment Directions and Standards (Draft)

‘The Public Hearing on the 2020 Government R&D Investment Direction and Standards (Plan)" was held on February 26 (Tue) at The K Hotel Seoul, organized by KISTEP and hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT).

Under the Framework Act on Science and Technology, ‘the Government R&D Investment Direction and Standards,’ which are established annually, contain details on government R&D-focused investment areas and efficiency plan, and investment strategies for each technology sector for next year. The investment direction will be used as the standard for the R&D budget demand for next year by the ministries and will be used as an important guide for allocating and coordinating the government R&D budget.

The investment direction (draft) was proposed with the goal of expanding innovative capabilities in Science and Technology (S&T) and realizing a happy life with the aim of investing in R&D next year. In addition, the government will promote six tasks to improve its R&D investment system, including enhancing strategic and efficient R&D investment, and strengthening autonomy and responsibility.

The 1st part of the public hearing was composed of presentation by Do Young Choi (Director of R&D Budget Coordination Division, Ministry of Science and ICT), and panel discussion was led by Han-woong Yeom (Vice Chairperson of the Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology (PACST)) with industry, academic, media, and ordinary citizens representing the S&T community. The 2nd part was contained with presentation about 6 technology sectors which are ①public & space, ②energy & environment, ③ICT & convergence, ④machanical & material, ⑤bio & medical and ⑥basic and infrastructure, and an in-depth discussion.

The investment direction for 2020 will be reviewed by PACST, finalized by March 15 and notified to the related institutes (22 ministries and offices).
