The 4th KISTEP NIS Policy Colloquium

On Oct 21st, KISTEP held the 4th NIS policy online colloquium, themed ‘How to Enhance GVC(Global Value Chain) for Sustainable Growth’. This colloquium was focus on forecasting and finding a strategy despite of external challenges such as the current trade tensions between the US and china, South Korea-Japan trade dispute, and Covid-19. This event was streaming online on KISTEP youtube channel.

▲ (Opening Address) President Sang-seon Kim (KISTEP)
 
President Sang-seon Kim delivered a opening address: “Korea has to find a new strategy for global competitiveness in international trade negotiations to turn challenges into opportunity.”
 
Presentations consisted of 2 sessions: (1)Director Kye-hwan Kim (Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade, KIET): ‘How to enhance GVC(Global Value Chain) for sustainable growth’, (2)Dr. Kye-hoon Doe (KISTEP): Forecasts and strategy for GVC in a perspective of technology innovation.

Director Kye-hwan Kim (KIET) gave 4 challenges to reorganize GVC: ▲High Concentration of supply and market, ▲Strategic Dependence, ▲Riffle Effects of Covid-19, ▲Technological Hegemony), and their counter-strategies.

Nest, Dr. Kye-hoon Doe (KISTEP) explained the characteristics, problems, and forecasts of GVC in all major industries.

 Mr. Jong-ho Ryu (Iljin Meterials Co,. Ltd) emphasized the importance of develping relation between conglomerates and small companies to have a priority of GVC.

Professor Myeong-joon Oh (Chonbuk National University) suggested since Covid-19 restricts not only the movement of people but logistics, the deliberation of reorganizing GVC in both old-fashioned businesses and emerging industries is essential.

Dr. Seong-hoon Jeon (KDI) emphasized the importance of discussion about how to improve Korea’s external dependence on industries.

Manager Eun-ha Kim (KOSBI) stressed the importance of the role of small businesses and establishing cooperation environment in the situation of reorganizing GVC.

Director Cheol-han Park (FKI) emphasized the competitive support of government can be connected to increase enterprises’ competitiveness, so that the discussion about this issues has to be continued.

Based on the result of interviews in domestic companies about the current status of reorganizing GVC, Manager Ho-bin Lee (KOTRA) suggested the support model that can increase both enterprises’ own competitiveness and export competitiveness through seizing a abroad opportunity.
