2024 Government R&D Program Joint Briefing

The “2024 Government R&D Program Joint Briefing”, jointly hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and 13 ministries and organized by KISTEP, was held at the Sejong Convention Center International Conference Hall for three days from January 23 to 25. This event was held simultaneously online and offline, and can be viewed through online web pages and live broadcast support platforms.

In the briefing, as the government R&D budget for 2024 was confirmed to be KRW 26.5369 trillion, 13 central administrative agencies came together to discuss the main contents and detailed implementation plans of R&D programs by ministries that are achieving innovation, including the characteristics of government R&D. It was designed to provide information and communicate with researchers from industry, academia, and research institutes.


On the first day of the event (the 23rd), the Science and Technology Innovation Headquarters discussed government R&D innovation plan, global R&D promotion strategies, government R&D budget for 2024, improvement of the national R&D administrative system, and characteristics of the Integrated R&D Information System system (IRIS). In the afternoon, MSIT, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare presented the direction of each ministry's global R&D programs, and then MSIT and the Ministry of Environment announced the details and schedule of each ministry's major R&D programs.


On the second day (24th), the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Rural Development Administration, Korea Forest Service, Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, and Ministry of Food and Drug Safety explained R&D programs, and on the last day (25th), explanations will be given in this order: Ministry of Education, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Young-chang Joo, Vice Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation of MSIT, said in his opening speech, “In response to competition for global technological hegemony, it is time for global R&D that aims to be the best in the world together with major countries, and we hope that this will be an opportunity to overcome the limitations of the catch-up R&D system and achieve a transition to a leading R&D system.”
